Nov. 10, 2008
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For the third time this season and fourth time during her career, University of Tennessee junior libero Chloe Goldman has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The Monterey, Calif., native led the Lady Vols to a pair of key road sweeps over Arkansas and Ole Miss this past weekend with a an average of 6.67 digs per set over the two matches.
Goldman played a key role in helping the Big Orange extend its current winning streak to a league-best nine matches with 40 digs, including 25 versus Arkansas and 15 against Ole Miss. She also had seven assists on the weekend, good for an average of 1.17 per set, and was relied on heavily in the passing game, recording just two reception errors in a team-high 45 attempts.
Her 25 digs against the Razorbacks marked the third-highest, three-set match total in school history, ranking behind only her own record of 31 digs against Georgia on Oct. 26, 2007, and fellow classmate Kylie Marshall's 26-dig performance at LSU on Oct. 22, 2006.
Following her stellar play this weekend, the 5-6 junior regained the top spot on the SEC digs chart with an average of 5.10 in league matches this season. She jumped past both Elena Martinez of LSU and Elyse Cusack from Florida, who are averaging 5.00 and 4.84 digs per set, respectively.
Goldman currently sits sixth all-time in the UT record book for total career digs after increasing her total to 1,095, surpassing former Lady Vol Molly Mooney's career mark of 1,055. She also remained in the top spot in career digs per set, moving her career average to 4.23 digs per set after besting Amy Morris' career average of 4.01 in October.
She also jumped three spots into fifth place on UT's single-season digs chart, increasing her season total to 419, to move past the previous single-season marks set by Kristy Dobson in 1990 (384) and 1991 (412), as well as Morris' 2003 total of 397.
For the season, Goldman's 419 digs lead all Lady Vol performers and she is tied for third on the team with 17 aces. Her 4.71 digs per set average also tops the team and ranks second all-time in the UT record book behind only her own average of 5.56 which she set last year. She has also been an integral cog in the UT passing game with just 15 reception errors in a team-high 503 attempts (.970) this season. During UT's nine-match winning streak, she has averaged 5.11 digs per set with 138 scoops in just 27 sets.
Goldman has already won the SEC Defensive Player of the Week award twice before this season, doing so in back-to-back weeks on Sept. 15 and 22. The Salinas H.S. product also claimed the award once during her sophomore campaign in 2007, taking home the honors for the week of Nov. 5.
The Lady Vols will return to Knoxville this weekend to close out the home portion of their schedule. They will first host No. 12 Florida at 7 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 14 before welcoming South Carolina to Rocky Top at 1:30 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 9 for their final home match of the season. Sunday's match will be tape delayed and broadcast on FOX Sports Regional Networks at 3:30 p.m. that same day.
