EX-UT ALL-AMERICAN BENNETT SNAGS SECOND IN 800 METERS AT USATF CHAMPIONSHIPS
June 26, 2005
CARSON, Calif. -- Former Lady Vol Kameisha Bennett became the third woman with University of Tennessee ties to earn a trip to the IAAF World Championships, as she charted a second-place finish in the finals of the 800-meter run Sunday at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Bennett, a 2004 UT graduate, rolled to a time of 2:00.59 on the final day of the meet at the Home Depot Center to forge a runner-up finish and earn a spot on her first international squad representing the United States. She will join former Lady Vol Dee Dee Trotter (400m) and current Big Orange standout Tianna Madison (long jump) on the American team that will travel to the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, on Aug. 6-14. Finishing just ahead of Bennett and winning a national title was Hazel Clark, sister and pupil of Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark. The former Florida All-American turned in an effort of 1:59.74 to win her first U.S. outdoor crown since triumphing at the 2000 Olympic Trials. J.J. Clark's wife, Jearl, made the finals but did not run on Sunday. Another Clark-coached athlete, former Georgetown star Treniere Clement, fared well in the 1500 meters late Saturday night in Carson and also put herself in position for a World Championships berth. Her 4:06.73 clocking was good for first place, marking her initial U.S. title.
