Like the old tournament adage goes, survive and advance, and that is exactly what the Lady Vol Tennis team did on Thursday afternoon at the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Oxford, Miss. Tabbed as the fifth seed in the championships, Tennessee dispatched of 12th-seeded Alabama, 5-1, in opening round play at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in winning five of six singles contests. With the victory UT improves to 17-10 overall while the Crimson Tide conclude tournament action with a 7-15 ledger.
Sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas) sealed the triumph for the Lady Vols as she overcame a first set setback to net a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, decision over Jenny Ketchum at the fourth singles hole. Not willing to let her singles winning streak be snapped at 13 without a fight, freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.), a second team All-SEC honoree, overcame a determined effort from Becca Baum at No. 6 singles to record a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, victory. The win was her team-leading 25th of the campaign. At the top singles slot, sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas) posted a 6-3, 6-1, decision against Weyli Chang. Extending her winning streak to four consecutive matches was sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y.) who registered a 6-0, 6-2, triumph over Dominique Glinzler at the second singles position. Rounding out action for Tennessee was its senior, Candy Reid (Surrey, England) who at the fifth hole etched out a 6-2, 6-1, outcome with Selia Mathew.
The doubles matches were not contested on the afternoon.
The Orange and White will now advance to the quarterfinals for a tilt with defending SEC Tournament champion and fourth-seeded Ole Miss (15-6) on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
