On a picturesque, 70-degree afternoon, the Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team opened Southeastern Conference play on Saturday (Feb. 26) with a 7-2 victory over 67th-ranked Alabama at the UT Varsity Courts. The win ended UT's three-match losing streak and more importantly gave the Lady Vols some momentum heading into their showdown with No. 3 Georgia (5-1, 1-0 SEC) on Sunday (Feb. 27) in Athens, Ga. With the decision, the Orange and White move to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the SEC while the Crimson Tide fall to 4-4 and 0-3 in conference.

Holding a 4-2 advantage following singles competition, Tennessee decided the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Candy Reid (Surrey, England) and sophomore Agnes Wiski (Flushing, NY) gave the Lady Vols the win following a 8-1 triumph over Alabama's duo of Becca Baum and Weyli Chang and No. 2 doubles. UT's other tandems of freshman Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R.) and sophomore Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas) along with the duo of freshman Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Meiling Parks (Abilene, Texas) each garnered decisions at the first and third positions, respectively.

In singles, Reid made quick work of the Tide's Selia Mathew as she netted a 6-1, 6-1, triumph at No. 5. Overcoming an early first-set deficit, Ojeda rallied to post a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Chang at the top singles hole. Tennessee also gained wins from Castellvi and Cleveland at the second and sixth positions, respectively. With no rest for the weary, the Lady Vols will next be in action on Sunday (Feb. 27) with a 2 p.m. matchup in Athens, Ga., with the third-rated Bulldogs.
