UT Closes Out Fall Schedule on High Note at SEC Coaches Classic
Nov. 8, 2008
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Tennessee women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its schedule with a number of strong performances on Saturday at the Southeastern Conference Fall Coaches Classic at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Sophomore Jennifer Meredith picked up a pair of titles, winning the Bronze singles draw and joining forces with freshman Natalie Pluskota to take home the White draw championship in doubles play.
A native of Marietta, Ga., Meredith easily dispatched Arkansas' Emily Carbone, 6-4, 6-3, in the Bronze draw final to conclude a perfect stay at the tournament. She opened the competition with a victory over Kentucky's Caroline Lilley before downing Heather Steinbauer from Vanderbilt in three sets, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3.
Three other Lady Vols also earned singles victories on Saturday, led by sophomore Rosalía Alda's 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Alabama's Courtney McLane in the Crimson draw. Junior Zsófia Zubor and Natalie Pluskota, meanwhile, notched straight set victories of their own in the Gold and Blue draws, respectively. Zubor took out LSU's Nicole Kantor, 6-2, 6-4, while Pluskota defeated Jennifer Stone of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Samantha Orlin rounded out the team's effort with a 6-2, 6-2, loss at the hands of Laura Van de Stroet from Ole Miss.
In doubles action, both UT pairings emerged victorious in their matches. In the White draw title contest, Meredith and Pluskota earned their third win in as many days, defeating the Georgia duo of Naoko Ueshima and Cameron Ellis, 8-5. That triumph came on the heels of back-to-back 8-1 victories over the Auburn team of Whitney Chappell and Jil Hastenrath and the Alabama combo of Tiffany Welcher and Paulina Bigos.
The Tennessee tandem of Alda and Zubor, meanwhile, finished the tournament with a 2-1 record after beating Barbara Pinterova and Jo Mather from Florida, 8-4, on Saturday. The Lady Vol duo dropped its opening contest, 8-2, to McLane and Lindsey from Alabama, before claiming an 8-4 triumph over Kantor and Whitney Wolf from LSU.
The Lady Vols will take the next two months off from competitive action until they open the spring portion of their schedule at the Michigan Invitational from Jan. 17-19. UT's first dual match will take place at 1 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 24 against Illinois in Champaign, Ill. From there, the Big Orange will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue the following day.
