Oct. 27, 2008
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - University of Tennessee junior netter Caitlin Whoriskey's stay at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships came to an end on Monday as she was defeated in the semifinal round of the main singles draw at the Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Despite winning the first set, the 5-8 junior from East Sandwich, Mass., dropped a hard-fought, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2), decision to the eventual tournament champion, Josipa Bek of Clemson. The loss ended Whoriskey's four-day stay at the competition, where she earned four singles victories to move her record to 8-5 this fall.
Whoriskey had not dropped a single set coming into Monday's contest, having defeated Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg, 6-1, 6-4, in the opening round, as well as Anna Milian from Elon, 6-0, 7-5, in the second. She also took North Carolina's Shinann Featherston, 6-2, 7-5, and Clemson's Keri Wong, 6-1, 6-0.
Bek later claimed the tournament title on Monday afternoon, sweeping No. 72nd-ranked and second-seeded Laura Gioia from Furman, 6-2, 7-5, in the finals.
Tennessee will next be in action when it closes out the fall portion of its schedule Nov. 6-9 at the Southeastern Conference Coaches Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
