BELGRADE, Serbia - Lady Vol rising senior Michele King grabbed a gold medal in the 400m free relay finals on Sunday at the Tasmajdan swimming pool during day one of the swimming competition at the 2009 World University Games.

The foursome of King, Madison Kennedy, Ava Ohlgren and Morgan Scroggy took first in the sprint relay with a time of 3:41.81. Japan was second in 3:42.60 and Canada grabbed bronze with a time of 3:43.09.

King earned a spot on the U.S. team by tying Kennedy, who wrapped up her senior season at California in March, in the 50m free (25.22) at the 2008 U.S. Open Championships nearly a year ago in Minneapolis, Minn.

Ohlgren and Scroggy joined King as representing the Southeastern Conference in Belgrade. Ohlgren is a rising senior at Auburn, while Scroggy will be a junior at Georgia this fall.

King will return to the pool on Friday when she competes in the heats for the 50m free.

Rising junior Martina Moravcikova makes her 2009 World University Games debut today as she competes in the 100m breaststroke.
