Huff Chosen as Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second Team All-American
May 27, 2009
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Tennessee Lady Vol junior Tiffany Huff reaped the UT softball program's 16th All-American nod, all coming since 2004, and her first overall career selection by being chosen on Wednesday as one of 18 members of the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Second Team.
The 5-7 catcher/first baseman joins Big Orange alums Monica Abbott (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), Tonya Callahan (2006, 2007, 2008), Kristi Durant (2005, 2006), Sarah Fekete (2005, 2006), Lindsay Schutzler (2005, 2006, 2007) and India Chiles (2007) in forming an impressive list of seven Lady Vols who have earned All-American honors. Every selection in program history has occurred under the tutelage of co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly, who arrived to helm Tennessee prior to the 2002 season.
"Tiffany Huff epitomizes the term All-American," Lady Vol co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "She is a leader on and off the field and is a clutch player who is a joy to coach."
During her breakout 2009 campaign, Huff posted career highs in batting average (.399 on 63-of-158), runs scored (48), hits (63), home runs (eight), RBIs (67), total bases (102), slugging (.646) and on-base percentage (.522) and stolen bases (11), while adding 13 doubles, a triple and 43 walks. Her 67 RBIs currently rate her third in the SEC and a 1.14 RBI-per-game average places her in the Top 10 in NCAA Division I in that category. A Top 25 finalist for the prestigious USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award, Huff started all 59 games for the Big Orange in 2009 at either first base or behind the plate. The Saugus, Calif., native tallied 14 multi-hit and 14 multi-RBI games and recorded a career-long 17-game hitting streak from Feb. 20-March 21 during which she .556 with four HR's and 27 RBIs. Huff was also chosen on Wednesday as a second team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American for her stellar production on the diamond as well as in the classroom (3.69 GPA in special education).
"Tiffany dedicated herself to working harder this past fall than ever before," Lady Vol co-head coach Karen Weekly said. "This award is a testament to her commitment to be the best player she can be. I'm very proud of her accomplishment."
