HUMPHREY'S TWO-HITTER AND ROUSTAN'S PAIR OF HOMERS TRIGGER 13-0 ROUT OF TSU
Feb. 20, 2002
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Junior Stephanie Humphrey, honored as the Southeastern Conference's Pitcher of the Week yesterday, limited Tennessee State (2-3) to just two hits as the Lady Vols (13-5-1) took the first game of a twinbill, 13-0, on Tuesday. The game was stopped after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The right-hander twirled her third solo shutout in moving her mark to 7-3, while junior third baseman Carissa Roustan belted homers in the first and second frames to lead an 11-hit offensive attack. Tennessee came flying out of the chutes with back-to-back homers in the top of the first to assume a 3-0 lead. Junior Blaine Teasley drew a leadoff walk and senior Adrianna Wilson smacked her fifth dinger of the season over the scoreboard overlooking the left field fence with one down. Roustan followed with her fourth of the campaign over the 225-foot mark in center off sophomore pitcher Shannon Hicks. The visitors put the game out of reach in the second with six runs on four hits, including Roustan's second homer of the game, to balloon the lead to 9-0. Stephanie Humphrey was plunked by a pitch to open the inning and the Knoxville native would advance to second on a wild pitch from Hicks. Sophomore Andie Sherman laid down a sacrifice bunt to push her teammate over to third before sophomore Nikki Sexton punched an RBI single through the left side to drive in Humphrey. After Sexton swiped second, Teasley and sophomore Ellisha Humphrey laced an infield singles to load the bases full of Lady Vols. Wilson lofted an apparent sacrifice fly into left that was dropped, enabling Sexton and Teasley to come across. Roustan then rocked a three-run jack to right to increase the UT advantage to nine runs.
Sherman's first career hit with two out in the fourth brought home Roustan with another run and the Orange would add three more in the stanza to race out to a 13-0 lead. With Roustan on third and Stephanie Humphrey at first after a single, Sherman stroked a base-hit into left to drive in her teammate. Another single by Sexton loaded the sacks before Teasley earned a free pass from Hicks for another score. Ellisha Humphrey smoked a liner into right to drive in Sexton and Sherman but Teasley was thrown out trying to take third, ending the inning. Stephanie Humphrey's bid for a perfect game was foiled when Antionette Armstrong opened the fourth with a double to left field. However, the right-hander buckled down to retire Hicks (pop-up), senior Casundra Jo Sharp (fly out) and senior Denna Miller (pop-up) to keep the Lady Tigers off the board. Ellisha Humphrey (2-for-4, two RBI), Roustan (2-for-3, four RBI, three runs) and Sexton (2-for-2, two runs) paced Tennessee at the plate, while Stephanie Humphrey helped herself by scoring twice. Hicks fell to 1-2 on the season by surrendering 13 earned runs on 10 hits with six walks and three strikeouts. |
