SOCCER HONORS 2005 TEAM AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET
May 8, 2006 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With the historic 10th season of Lady Volunteer Soccer in the rear view mirror, the 2005 squad celebrated its season at the team's year-end banquet on Friday evening. Tennessee went 15-6-2 on the season, capturing the SEC triple crown (division, overall and tournament championship) for the second time in program history while appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Junior midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) was chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player after earning first-team All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and adidas. Christoph tied for second on the squad in goals (5), and her 21 career assists puts her just three back of Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.) for fifth all-time in UT history. Forwards Emily Redberg (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Kylee Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) shared Offensive MVP honors. Rossi led the squad with eight goals and 20 points on the campaign. The second-team All-SEC forward also earned second-team Freshman All-America accolades from the Soccer Buzz and Soccer America publications. Redberg tallied five goals and three assists on the season. The redshirt sophomore, who also snagged the Sense of Urgency award, was an Academic All-SEC selection, and she earned Lady Vol Athlete of the Week honors on Oct. 26. Defenders also took home some awards. Junior defender Jenny Jeffers (Lake Zurich, Ill.) was selected as the Defensive MVP. Jeffers logged the most minutes on the team during the year and added two assists. The Most Improved award went to sophomore defender Erica Griffin (Memphis, Tenn.). The outside back played in all 23 matches and, along with Jeffers, helped lead a defense that allowed only 7.2 shots per game. The Coaches' Award was presented to senior goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.). She leaves Rocky Top as the program's all-time leader in wins, shutouts and goals against average. Her 32 career shutouts and 0.82 goals against average rank second all-time in SEC annals. The Lady Vols also honored their winter free-for-all champions. The team of Christoph, Griffin, Redberg and freshman Mick Imgram (Clifton, Va.) won the winter-training team competition. Tennessee kicks off the 2006 soccer season on Friday, Aug. 25 as UT squares off against Maryland in University Park, Pa.
