KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman forward Kylee Rossi's goal in the ninth minute and a late insurance score by sophomore forward Hayley Prendergast helped lead the Tennessee soccer team to a 2-1 win over South Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Complex. The match was taped by Comcast Sports Southeast and will be shown on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. EDT.

"I'm so happy that we're now 4-0 in such a tough conference," said UT head coach Angela Kelly. "After an emotional win on Friday, I knew it would be a tough challenge in more ways than one today, especially as we battled the heat. I'm very proud of all my girls, as we got contributions from a bunch of different players today. That will be a big help to our team at the end of the season."

The Lady Vols (6-4-1, 4-0 SEC) scored their earliest goal of the season in the ninth minute when Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) flicked in the throw-in from freshman defender Sarah Van Sickle (Knoxville/Farragut). The goal was Rossi's fourth of the season, while Van Sickle got her first career helper on the play. UT had one other good look in the first half, as sophomore Genna Gorman (Lakewood, Colo.) beat Gamecock goalkeeper Lindsay Thorstenson to a ball about 35 yards from the nets. The 2004 SEC Co-Freshman of the Year hit a hard shot, but USC defender Jackie Welch headed the ball out of harm's way.

South Carolina (5-6, 1-3 SEC) was held without a shot in the first half, but they came back quickly in the second period. Welch had a one-on-one with UT goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) just 2:28 after the half, but her shot went left.

The Big Orange stayed on the attack, as in the 50th minute freshman midfielder Leslie Vineyard (St. Louis, Mo.) headed a shot off Gorman's corner kick towards the net, but it went right. Six minutes later, Rossi blasted a shot from the left wing just outside the penalty box, but Thorstenson made a nice diving save.

Tennessee got their second goal at 85:38 when Prendergast (Hingham, Mass.) finished off the break started by freshman forward Jackie Acevedo (Austin, Texas) from 10 yards out for her first goal of the season. Acevedo picked up her fifth assist on the play, which leads the squad.

The Gamecocks answered quickly, as Jessi Swaim put in her third goal of the year off of a cross from Kim Boulos just 19 seconds after Prendergast's score. USC tried to finish off the comeback, but the Lady Vols kept control of the ball and kept the Gamecocks from getting off another shot.

In the match, the Orange and White took a 14-4 lead in shots and held the Garnet and Black from firing any corner kicks, compared to 15 taken by UT. The win was Tennessee's fifth straight overall and the 12th victory in a row by the squad in Southeastern Conference affairs at the Regal Soccer Complex, the longest in school history.

The Lady Vols open a four-game road swing against Arkansas at 7 p.m. CDT on Friday night at Lady `Back Field in Fayetteville before heading to Baton Rouge, La., to face the Tigers of LSU in a 2 p.m. CDT match.
