LYNDSEY PATTERSON'S GOAL IS THE DIFFERENCE AS NO. 12 LADY VOLS EDGE UCSB, 1-0
Aug. 29, 2003
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Tennessee junior forward Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.) tallied the lone score of the contest with 8:29 remaining in regulation as the 12th-ranked Lady Vols defeated UC Santa Barbara in the regular season opener for both squads on Friday night. With its 1-0 decision over the Gauchos, the Big Orange remained perfect in eight lid-lifters at the UT Soccer Complex dating back to 1996. UT sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) was required to make one stop in pitching a shutout in her collegiate starting debut. The whitewash was the first for the Lady Vols in a season opener since a 3-0 win over Memphis on Aug. 29, 1997. The decisive play developed late in the second half when junior midfielder Kayla Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio) sent a through ball to her teammate streaking down the right wing. From there, Patterson weaved past a UCSB defender and was able to beat Gaucho sophomore keeper Jamie Considine down low on a shot from around eight yards out for the fourth match-winner of her career. Oddly enough, three of the striker's four goals in '02 proved to be the difference in UT victories over N.C. State, Auburn and Kentucky. "I am very proud of my team's effort tonight," said fourth-year head coach Angela Kelly. "They definitely competed for the full 90 minutes. It's hard to get a perfect rhythm when you're coming out of preseason, having played together for just two weeks." "While there were some flashes of brilliance, there are still a couple of things we need to tighten up. Overall, a win is a win and I am looking forward to Sunday's match against Fresno State. Vanessa was our coaching staff's Player of the Game and I thought she looked composed and mature in her first start."
Paced by two attempts from junior Sue Flamini (Cranford, N.J.), the hosts held an 8-4 disparity on the shot chart and also maintained a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. UT's defensive contingent of junior Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.) and seniors Marie-Eve Nault (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec) and Carie and Tracy Swibas (Lakewood, Colo.) limited UCSB's high-scoring duo of juniors Jennifer Borcich and Krystal Sandza to just one attempt combined. UT will welcome Fresno State, a 3-1 winner over host Charlotte tonight, to Rocky Top for a 2 p.m. match on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Gauchos will head up to the Tar Heel State for a clash with the 49ers.
