Four Former Lady Vols Vying for LPGA Card at Q-School

Dec. 3, 2008

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Four former Lady Vol golfers began their quest to play the 2009 season on the LPGA Tour on Wednesday at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.

Current volunteer assistant coach Young-A Yang as well as Angela Oh, Jessica Shepley and Violeta Retamoza are all competing to either earn or improve their current LPGA membership status at the 90-hole event held over five days at the LPGA International.

Yang had the best day of the former UT golfers. The four-time All-American fired a 2-under, 70 and is tied for ninth after the first round of play.

Oh, two shots back of Yang, is tied for 32nd after shooting an even-par, 72.

Jessica Shepley and Violeta Retamoza will be looking to rebound from their first round performances after shooting 76 and 77, respectively. Shepley is tied for 101st, while Retamoza is tied for 114th.

The top 20 players at the conclusion of the event will earn Priority in Category 11 LPGA memberships. Players finishing 21st through 30th will receive Priority in Category 16, while players finishing between 31st and 40th places will earn Priority in Category 20.

The 140-person field will be cut to the top 70 players after the completion of 72 holes on Saturday. The final round will be played on the LPGA International Champions course on Sunday.

Shiya Oyama leads after the first round with a score of 8-under, 64.

Yang and Retamoza have both been regulars on the LPGA Tour over the last few years, while Shepley already earned her LPGA card by finishing seventh on the 2008 Duramed FUTURES Tour money list. She is looking to improve her Priority status.

Oh is looking to make the LPGA for the first time, after playing two years for Tennessee.

The four women are some of the most decorated Lady Vol golfers of all-time. They hold four of the top six lowest career scoring averages in UT history and each earned All-America or All-SEC honors while at Rocky Top.
