Lady Vols Cap Fall With Match Play Victory Over No. 4 Georgia

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Tennessee women's golf team wrapped up its fall season by defeating No. 4 Georgia, 4-0-1, to finish 13th at the 2008 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship on Tuesday at Ginn Reunion Resort.

Freshman Nathalie Mansson and sophomore Lauren Spurlock each defeated Bulldogs listed in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Individual Rankings Top-50. Mansson defeated No. 43 Marta Silva, 2 and 1, while Spurlock bested No. 36 Carolina Andrade also by the score of 2 and 1.

Junior Ginny Brown defeated Leigh Crosby, 4 and 2, while sophomore Rebecca Watson won by forfeit. Junior Diana Cantú finished all square with Tess Fordham.

"Today was a really fun day and a good way to end our fall," Lady Vol head golf coach Judi Pavon said. "Lauren (Spurlock) and Nathalie (Mansson) played awesome against really good players today. Ginny (Brown) also got a big win for us early and Diana (Cantú) stayed in her match and got a half."

The Lady Vols finished the tournament 2-1. UT opened the match play portion of the tournament with a 3-1-1 loss to No. 21 Arizona on Monday morning, but bounced back to defeat Tulsa 3-2 in the afternoon.

The Lady Vols received the 12th-seed in the match play tournament based on their 36-hole score of 299-304=603 (+27) during the qualifying competition on Sunday and were sent to the consolation side of the match play bracket with the lower eight squads in the 16-team tournament. Cantú finished the match play tournament with a record of 2-0-1, Mansson and Spurlock both went 2-1, Watson was 1-2, Ginny Brown had a record of 1-1-1.

 

 

No. 7 Duke defeated No. 6 Alabama, 4-1, to win its fifth Hooters Match Play Championship in six years, while Michigan State topped No. 12 Denver, 3-1-1- for third-place.

The Lady Vols will take the rest of November and all of December and January off from completion, and return to action from Feb. 8-10 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan.
