After finishing the 2007-08 season with a 36-2 record and celebrating their eighth national title, the Lady Vols opened the 2008- 09 slate with a 135-55 exhibition win over the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles on Nov. 6. Freshman Glory Johnson poured in 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while classmate Alyssia Brewer added 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals.

Formed in 2000, the "Love and Basketball" team is comprised of Southern California residents, most of whom are former collegiate players at local area universities. The movie "Love and Basketball", written and directed by honorary team member Gina Prince- Bythewood, is for all of us with a dream.

Pat Summitt begins her 35th year as head coach of the Lady Vols with an overall career record of 983 wins and 182 losses, and eight national championship banners. Summitt is joined on the sidelines by associate head coach Holly Warlick and assistant coaches Dean Lockwood and Daedra Charles-Furlow. The squad is coached by Colleen Matsuhara and assisted by Reggie Snell and Fred Williams. Matsuhara has been the head coach at Cal-Irvine, where she was honored as 1995 Big West Coach of the Year. She was also the head coach at Nebraska and an assistant at UCLA, USC, Texas and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, among other stops.

The 135 points UT posted against Carson-Newman are the secondmost by a Pat Summitt-coached team in an exhibition game, behind only the 144 scored against Dynamo Kiev on Nov. 5, 2000...Freshman Glory Johnson impressed the hometown crowd with 33 points and 14 rebounds in her first collegiate game at Thompson-Boling Arena... Classmate Alyssia Brewer also posted a double-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and added seven steals...From the 14:13 mark in the first half until the 8:30 point, the Lady Vols featured five freshmen on the floor...UT opened on a 17-4 run, spurred by nine Kelley Cain points... Cain and the Lady Vols owned the paint, scoring 44 of their 64 first half points in the paint and 80 tallies overall for the game...Joining Johnson, Brewer and Cain in double figures were Shekinna Stricklen (17), Amber Gray (16) and Alicia Manning (19)...Senior Alex Fuller tossed in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds...Manning's free throw at the 8:07 mark of the second half -- her first toss from the charity stripe of the game -- put the Lady Vols over the century mark...The 135 points mark the fourth time in the past five exhibition games against Carson-Newman that UT has put up triple digits...The Lady Vols forced 29 Lady Eagle turnovers and converted them into 47 points...UT held Carson-Newman to 33.3% shooting for the game...Stricklen made her first field goal attempt in the Orange and White at the 18:12 mark of the first half...In addition to her 17 points, she grabbed six rebounds and six steals...Brewer and Gray both made their first three field goal attempts...The first Lady Vol basket of the game was at the 19:45 mark on a Cain layup; the first basket of the second half came at the 17:23 mark on a Shekinna Stricklen putback. UT is the final stop on the Love & Basketball slate for the 2008- 09 preseason...They have beaten Cal State Northridge (81-72), Long Beach State (65-64) and lost to USC (79-63), UCLA (86-80) and Washington (77-73)...As a sophomore at San Francisco, Denise Woods earned honorable mention All-West Coast Conference honors after leading the league in rebounds and finishing third in blocks and fourth in scoring...As a junior at Jackson State, LaSheree Christian earned All-Southwest Athletic Conference honors, averaging 12.2 ppg and 3.8 apg...Alexis Kendrick still holds the career record for games started at Georgia (132) and scored 1,157 career points for the Lady Bulldogs...Kendrick earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors in 2003 and All-SEC Third Team in 2004...Charlee Underwood earned All-Big West Freshman Team honors after sinking 43 threes in her rookie campaign...She led the conference in three-point percentage as a junior and earned second team laurels as a senior...Tanisha Johnson was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year during the 1998-99 season at Arkansas State and received allconference honors in 1998-'99 and 1999-2000...Jessica Cheeks led Southern Cal in assists as a sophomore (3.7) and a junior (4.1)...As a senior at St. John's, Danielle Rainey shot 40.7 percent from the field and averaged 16.4 ppg...As a junior at UCLA, Natalie Nakase dished out 4.5 assists per game to rank fifth in the Pac-10...As a senior, she dished out 148 assists...As a junior at San Diego State, Shannon Clay shot 45 percent from the field and was fourth on the team in scoring...As a sophomore at Cal, Amber White averaged 5.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg and totaled 81 assists on the season.
