After finishing off the 2007-08 season with a 36-2 record and celebrating their eighth national title, the 2008-09 Tennessee Lady Vols open the year against the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles in an exhibition contest for the fifth straight campaign. The Lady Eagles return four starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad that went 15-14...The Lady Eagles return 74 percent of their scoring from a season ago and 60 percent of the rebounding.

Pat Summitt begins her 35th year as head coach of the Lady Vols with an overall career record of 983 wins and 182 losses, and eight national championship banners. Summitt is joined on the sidelines by associate head coach Holly Warlick and assistant coaches Dean Lockwood and Daedra Charles-Furlow. Coach Dean Walsh begins his eighth season at C-N and his 14th season as a head coach. Walsh has compiled a career record of 243-129 (.653) in his 13 campaigns as a head coach. He is assisted by Mike Mincey, Emily Paffrath and Mike Potts.

The 2008-09 version of the Lady Vols has the distinction of being the youngest group ever to don the Orange and White...2008 SEC Freshman of the Year Angie Bjorklund (8.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and redshirt senior Alex Fuller (6.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg) will look to provide leadership for the young group...Bjorklund started in 30 of 38 games last season and will be a valuable asset, especially from behind the arc, as she hit 68 threes last year...Fuller scored a career-high 19 points in her second career start at No. 15 DePaul last season...Redshirt sophomore Cait McMahan returns to the lineup after sitting out the 2007-08 season following knee surgery...As a freshman, McMahan averaged 13.7 minutes, 2.4 ppg and 1.3 apg...Fellow sophomore Vicki Baugh will be a valuable part of the squad...In 13 minutes in the national title game, she scored eight points and grabbed three boards before going down with a torn ACL...The Lady Vols will look to 6'6" redshirt freshman Kelley Cain to provide an inside presence... As a rookie, Cain scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added four assists, three steals and two blocks against the Lady Eagles before undergoing knee surgery...Summitt will turn to a very talented freshmen class to provide an instant impact...Local product Glory Johnson could be listed as a "Candace Parker-style" forward-centerguard... Shekinna Stricklen can play both guard spots or the three...At, 5'2", Briana Bass will play the point and use her lightning quickness to her advantage...Alyssia Brewer is a lefty who can step out to the three or play inside...Alicia Manning will also play both guard spots or at the three...Rounding out the talented freshman group is Amber Gray who will mix it up inside or step out and drain the three. Similar to the Lady Vols, the Lady Eagles play a demanding early schedule...C-N opened with an exhibition at North Carolina on Nov. 4, falling 114-64...Leading the Lady Eagles against the Tar Heels was sophomore Mandy Mendenhall with 16 points, to go with four rebounds and four assists...Junior Shari Buford added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds...Coach Walsh will look to four seniors for leadership this season, forward Lindsey Eggleston, guard Tykira McDaniel, forward Ashley Tipton and guard Angela Volentine...The Lady Eagles sport eight freshmen on the roster, but return four starters and 74 percent of their scoring the 2007-08 campaign... Despite being out-rebounded last season in Knoxville, the Lady Eagles would finish the season ranked second in NCAA Division II in rebound margin with a plus-11.7 margin...Buford is C-N's leading returnee, averaging 12.4 ppg and 8.3 rpg last season on her way to being named All-South Atlantic Conference...Last season against the Lady Vols, she managed only three points and three boards in 25 minutes...McDaniel led Carson-Newman against UT last season with 10 points and grabbed four rebounds...For the season, McDaniel averaged 6.4 ppg and 2.2 rpg...In D-II the Lady Eagles ranked No. 36 in field goal percentage (44.1) and No. 38 in threepoint percentage (35.4) last year...C-N was paced behind the arc by Tipton who converted at a 48.0 percent clip (71-of-148) to rank second in NCAA Division II...Buford, who made 150 of 270 field goal attempts (55.6%) last year, was 18th in D-II...Eggleston added 5.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg off the bench for Coach Walsh and earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors...She was fourth in the conference from the free-throw line with an 82.5 percentage (66-of- 80)...Junior Ashley Kyle was fourth in the SAC with 4.7 assists per game.
