Tonight's game marks the first exhibition contest of the season
for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. Head Coach Pat Summitt's team
is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2008-09 season, which
saw UT suffer its earliest NCAA Tournament defeat ever, a first-round
upset loss to 12-seed Ball State. The Lady Vols return four of five
starters, including USBWA National Freshman of the Year Shekinna
Stricklen (13.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg and 3.0 apg in 2008-09).

The Lady Eagles return three starters and nine letterwinners from
last year's squad that went 19-11...The 2008-09 Carson-Newman
side advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament...The Lady Eagles
have been selected to finish second in the South Atlantic Conference
in a vote of the league's nine coaches...Senior Ashley Kyle (14.7 ppg
in 2008-09) and Shari Buford (13.9 ppg in 2008-09) were both named
to the first team preseason all conference squad.

Pat Summitt, in her 36th year as head coach of the Lady Vols,
boasts an overall career record of 1,005 wins and 193 losses and
eight national championships. Summitt is joined on the sidelines by
associate head coach Holly Warlick and assistant coaches Dean
Lockwood and Daedra Charles-Furlow.
Head Coach Dean Walsh is in his ninth season at Carson-Newman and in his 15th year as a head coach. He boasts a 261-141 overall record and a 134-101 mark on the Lady Eagle sideline. He is assisted by Mike Mincey, Emily Paffrath and Mike Potts.

This marks the second consecutive year that Tennessee opens
its exhibition season against Carson-Newman...Last year, the Lady
Vols dominated the contest, winning by a score of 135-55...It was the
third most points ever scored by a Summitt coached team...Shekinna
Stricklen and Angie Bjorklund both have been named to the 2009-10
Preseason All-SEC First Team by the league coaches, while sophomore
Glory Johnson earned second team accolades...In a vote of conference
media, Stricklen earned preseason first team honors and Bjorklund was
selected to the second team...Stricklen was named Freshman of the
Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association after leading
the team with 13.3 ppg and 3.0 apg...Bjorklund was a second-team
All-SEC selection last year after averaging 11.4 ppg, 3.4 apg, 3.3 rpg
and 1.0 spg...Johnson scored in double figures 16 times during her
inaugural campaign...The Knoxville native also brought down double
digit rebounds on 10 occasions and recorded five double-doubles...
After missing the 2007-08 season with a knee injury, redshirt sophomore
Kelley Cain averaged 10.3 ppg in SEC action...Running the offense this
year will be Briana Bass, a 5-2 point guard from Indianapolis Ind....
Bass scored in double digits three times during the 2008-09 season,
including a career-high 14 points against Duke...Tennessee went 13-2
at home in 2008-09, including a 7-0 mark against conference foes...
This season will be the first in Coach Summitt's 36-year career that the
Lady Vols do not have a senior.
The Lady Eagles opened exhibition play on Nov. 2 with a
96-68 loss at No. 24 MTSU...Senior Ashley Kyle led the Lady
Eagles with 16 points...Going just 3-of-7 from the field, Kyle was
10-of-12 from the charity stripe...Also posting double digits was
sophomore forward Zoriah Williams, who finished with 11 points
and five steals in just 13 minutes...Senior forward Shari Buford
led C-N in rebounding with eight...She was the third-leading
scorer for the Lady Eagles with eight points...C-N will continue
its demanding exhibition slate on Nov. 10, when the Lady Eagles
travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on the North Carolina Tar
Heels before opening regular season play on Nov. 15 against
Anderson (S.C.)...Coach Walsh will look to Kyle and Buford to
lead the Lady Eagles in 2009-10...Kyle, a Jefferson City, Tenn.,
native, led Carson-Newman with 14.7 ppg last season as the
Lady Eagles posted a 19-11 overall record (9-7 in South Atlantic
Conference play) and a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament...
Buford, a Hampton, Ga., native, was second on the team with
13.9 ppg and grabbed a team-best 7.7 rpg in 2008-09...C-N also
returns junior Mandy Mendenhall, who started 29 of 30 games
a year ago, averaging 11.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 2.8 apg...Joining
the squad this season is Katlin Moore, a transfer from Division
I Presbyterian College...The Fort Mill, S.C., native led the Blue
Hose with 12.0 ppg and 3.9 apg, and she pulled down 7.3 rpg.
