Jenny Moshak, University of Tennessee Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, announced this morning that Lady Vol head basketball coach Pat Summitt had undergone successful shoulder surgery.

"Dr. Edwin Spencer and UT team orthopaedists Dr. Russ Betcher and Dr. Greg Mathien, performed arthroscopic surgery on Pat's right shoulder this morning at Ft. Sanders West Surgery Center," said Moshak. "The surgery addressed recurrent instability problems with her shoulder."

Summitt, who is beginning her 35th season at Tennessee, is the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history with a 983-182 overall record. She dislocated her shoulder on March 5, 2008, prior to the Southeastern Conference Tournament, while chasing a raccoon off the back deck at her home. The raccoon was about to attack Summitt's yellow Labrador Retrievers.

"Pat is doing well," said Moshak. "She will begin rehabbing the shoulder in about a week." Official team practice starts on Friday, Oct.17 and the first game of the 2008-09 season will be the home opener versus the University of San Francisco on Nov. 15.
