2004 Jimmy V Women's Basketball Classic
November 21, 2004 * Raleigh, N.C. * RBC Center * Game 2

Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt:
"Obviously I was much more pleased with our intensity and execution in the second half. I credit NC State for getting out there early and blocking our passing lanes. Our two freshmen off the bench brought a great deal of intensity. We got some looks inside, but sometimes we just couldn't finish. They really disrupted us with their defensive pressure. You see someone on tape but its not the same thing, and they came out today with that quickness and took it to us."

"I really thought Brittany Jackson and Alexis Hornbuckle played well, and they brought a lot of energy out there. I thought Brittany was key in getting to the free throw line and she played solid defense. Brittany took advantage of the isolation and the one-on-one opportunity and got to the free throw line, and I think that was key."

"At halftime we addressed their defensive pressure and said that we had to move better without the ball. We struggled to get the ball inside and when you do that your offense is going to sputter. We retalked our action and about getting our rhythm down and playing good defense, "

"The Jimmy V Classic is a great event and we are honored to be a part of it. Coach V was an inspiration to so many people and we are so glad to be involved and help with the fight against cancer."

Tennessee senior Shyra Ely:
"I think that everyone just really stepped up today and took responsibility for what we were doing on the floor. It's a learning experience, and I am glad we could pull through it. We certainly give credit to NC State. Their defense caused us to turn the ball over and get flustered, but at the same time we tried to stick to playing our game."

Tennessee junior Shanna Zolman:
"We give credit to NC State. They took us out of our rhythm early on. Our defense and our boards kept us in the game. We have to be able to play our game, no matter what the situation is."

NC State head coach Kay Yow:
"I thought the team [NC State] played really hard and really played together. We're not as smart as we'd like to be, but we're young and it's early in the season. We've got to get some games under our belts and some time to be smarter. Our shots just aren't going in. We're working really hard on defense and are aggressive, but we just need some more shots to fall."

"We lost Marquetta [Dickens] with five fouls. She was creating a lot of havoc with her defensive pressure for us before then. That hurt. The main thing, however, was that we're missing some shots that we need to be putting down. We stayed intense defensively the whole game. We know we have some excellent shooters on our team. We just need to find our rhythm."

"It's tough [playing a team like Tennessee this early]. We'd like to have a few weeks before we played them, but we're still learning. We're still learning a lot about ourselves. I'm glad to see that our players didn't panic. I think we have a lot of potential because of the way we played tonight."

"I think its team defense [that has helped us]. We're going to have to help and watch each other's back. It's hard to defend one person really tough. Everyone is going to have to battle. Physically, play your man, but mentally, play someone else's as well. I like how we play together. They play so hard. To me, a team that plays hard and has good chemistry has great potential, and that's what I think we've got."

NC State player Ashley Key:
" I think they [Tennessee] applied a little bit more defensive pressure in the second half. It's just about maturity though and knowing what to do when. I think we did a good job, and it's still early, so we'll get better."
