PARKER LEADS UT AS LADY VOLS DOWN AUBURN 72-62

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -Candace Parker is making life on the road a little easier for Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. Parker had 25 points and 11 rebounds to keep third-ranked Tennessee unbeaten in the Southeastern Conference with a 72-62 victory over Auburn on Thursday night. It was the fifth consecutive win for Tennessee (22-2, 9-0 Southeastern Conference) since a loss to Duke on Jan. 22 and their 15th consecutive in the series against the Tigers (17-8, 4-5). "Candace Parker and Alexis Hornbuckle were pretty solid for us," Tennessee coach Pat Summitt said. "I thought those two really came to play. Life on the road is tough. We had a difficult time getting five people, particularly on the defensive end, to commit to what we wanted to accomplish." Hornbuckle had 12 points and nine rebounds. "It was a fun game," Parker said. "It was a road win for us in the SEC and that is always good. Auburn came in here and just wouldn't go away. We could be up by a lot and they would come back. I really tip my hat to their effort and them not giving up." The key to the victory was Tennessee's defensive intensity out of the gates. The Lady Vols held Auburn to just two points through the first 6 minutes en route to a 10-2 lead. "Their pressure is daunting, and we don't have anything in our practice that can simulate that," Auburn head coach Nell Fortner said. "You practice and tell them what they are going to face, but there is nothing like it when you get into that environment and it's happening." Tennessee made only 27 of 67 shots (40.3 percent) from the floor, but grabbed 19 offensive rebounds on the 40 misses. The Lady Vols outrebounded Auburn, 42-35. Tennessee went just 2-for-14 on 3-pointers, but made up for it at the free throw line, where Parker made 9 of 10 and Tennessee made 16-21. DeWanna Bonner had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Tigers. Reserve KeKe Carrier added 11 points and nine rebounds. Tennessee led by 18 points with just over 14 minutes remaining, when Auburn point guard Whitney Boddie increased the tempo. The Tigers went on a 21-10 run to cut Tennessee's lead to seven, but Sidney Spencer put the game out of reach with a 3-pointer and a pair of two-point shots.
