COACH PAVON ON LADY VOL GOLF FACILITIES

“Because we don't compete on the same course week-in and week-out, we feel that having access to so many diverse courses helps to prepare us for competition. We can choose a course for practice based on the characteristics of the course we'll be competing on. We feel very fortunate to have the support of so many great courses in Knoxville."

LADY VOL GOLF FACILITIES

The Lady Vols are fortunate to have membership privileges at three of the best country clubs in Knoxville. Holston Hills is the fifth-best course in the state, Cherokee is the most prestigious club in Knoxville and Gettysvue is one of the most challenging courses most golfers will ever face.

Tennessee National Golf Club

The Tennessee National Golf Club will be the home of the 2008 SEC Golf Championships.

Holston Hills Country Club
Located just east of campus on the banks of the Holston River, Holston Hills is the fifth-ranked course in the state of Tennessee. It is a long course with thick Bermuda rough and fast, tricky bent grass greens. Designed in 1927 by legendary Scottish designer Donald Ross, has a long history of hosting prestigious events, including the NCAA Championships (twice), the U.S. Open, USGA women’s mid amateur and the annual UT men’s golf Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. Holston Hills was recently restored to its original design and is now ranked as the 29th-best classical course by Golf Digest.

Yardage: 6,297
Par: 72

Sophomore Marci Turner on Holston Hills:
“Holston Hills is one of my favorite courses to play. It is fairly long and requires a good short game because of the fast greens. The fairways are forgiving but if you do miss in the rough it can make for a very interesting approach shot to the green. Though all of the trouble is visible from the tee, you really have to think your way around this course.”

Gettysvue Polo, Golf and Country Club
Gettysvue is an exclusive $20 million dollar community located on 300 rolling acres in the heart of Knoxville. The club has been open 10 years and features beautiful views of the Smoky and Cumberland mountains. It is a difficult course that requires precise shot placement and good course management. It is the former host of the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships, and requires players to make shots from various lies and into multi-tiered greens.

Yardage: 6,243
Par: 72

Senior Golda Johansson on Gettysvue:
“Gettysvue is a great course that challenges every part of your game. It is one of my favorites in Knoxville because you have to be able to hit many different kind of shots and you need to have a good imagination. The first hole on the course is one of my favorites. It demands a good shot right of the bat and you need to watch out for out of bounds on your right and houses on your left.”

Cherokee Country Club
Founded in 1907 on the hills overlooking the Tennessee River, Cherokee is unquestionably the most exclusive club in the Knoxville area. Its current layout was designed by the famed architect Donald Ross. The fairways are tight and lined with trees, with fast, undulating bent grass greens. Six difficult par threes throughout the course provide the players a strong challenge, which serves as the host of the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship. The scenic beauty of the course is unsurpassed, and it is located just five miles from the UT campus.

Yardage: 5,932
Par: 71

Senior Violeta Retamoza on Cherokee:
"I really like it because it is a very challenging golf course. You will never get bored; it is a different experience every time you play it."

Egwani Farms Golf Club
Located in Blount County, just 20 minutes south of campus, Egwani Farms is a traditional links golf course located at the foot of the Smokies. Always in excellent condition, the course is fairly open off the tee, with large greens and numerous water hazards which provide a great test of decision making and iron play.

Yardage: 6,150
Par: 72

Sophomore Jennifer Davis on Egwani Farms:
“My favorite hole at Egwani Farms is the par-four seventh. The dog leg right is lined with water all down the right side; therefore, making the tee shot quite intimidating. If you play a fade off the tee box, you can have around a 100 yard shot into the green, but if you draw the ball you could have a lot longer shot into the green."

Fox Den Country Club
Fox Den is a course that features bent grass greens, narrow tree-lined and well-bunkered fairways. Water hazards are a factor on numerous holes, including three greens (# 13, 16 and 18) which are almost completely surrounded by water. Designed by William Byrd in 1969, it underwent a million-dollar renovation in 2004. It was the site of the 2003 Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships. It also serves as the host for the Nationwide Tour event, the Knoxville Open.

Yardage: 6,000
Par: 72

Senior Violeta Retamoza on Hole 10 at Fox Den:
"My favorite hole at Fox Den is number ten because it is challenging and requires a precise tee ball. If you hit a good drive, you can leave yourself a short approach shot into the green by taking your second shot over the trees. This gives you a good birdie opportunity. If you hit a bad tee drive, you are left with a tough lay up shot which will leave you a mid iron on your approach to number ten's huge green. This hole is a great challenging par five."

M.C. James Practice Range
Located just five miles from campus, the M.C. James Practice Range is used exclusively by the University of Tennessee’s varsity golf programs. Three huge Bermuda grass tee boxes ensure that there will always be a great hitting surface. The range is situated on 30 acres overlooking the Tennessee River and features two large bent grass greens, two practice bunkers and a wedge tee and green.

Head Coach Judi Pavon on the M.C. James Practice Range:
“The MC James Practice Range is a great place to get work done on our games day in and day out. Because it's only available for use by the men's and women's golf team members we are able to alter the conditions as needed to prepare us for upcoming events. It's very close to campus and is always in great condition. We feel very fortunate to have such an exclusive practice facility.”

Willow Creek Golf Club
Willow Creek is an 18-hole championship course which is always in immaculate condition. It is an upscale daily-fee golf course featuring large bent grass greens and well-bunkered fairways. Creek winds through the course come into play on eight of the holes. In addition, Willow Creek has an excellent practice facility available for use by golf team members. It served as the host of the 1996 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championships and for the Ben Hogan’s Tour Knoxville Open.

Yardage: 6,317
Par: 72

Junior Holly Cantwell on Willow Creek: “Willow Creek is a great golf course and it is always in good shape. There are plenty of holes that give you the opportunity to make birdie on, but there are also some holes that can give you trouble if you do not play them smart. The last three holes are challenging holes to finish on and can make or break your round.”
